## Ice Machine Repair, Cleaning, and Filtration

A down ice machine can shut a bar or kitchen down fast. We repair and maintain commercial ice makers from Manitowoc, Ice-O-Matic, Scotsman, and Follett, diagnosing water-inlet, scale, harvest-cycle, and condenser issues, and handling cleaning and sanitization so production and ice quality stay on spec.

### How an ice machine actually fails

Ice machines have two systems that have to cooperate: a refrigeration circuit and a water path. Most failures start in the water path.

Water enters through an inlet solenoid valve, fills a sump, and gets distributed across a nickel-plated evaporator grid where it freezes into cubes. When the freeze cycle completes, a hot gas bypass valve warms the grid just enough to release the sheet, and the harvest cycle drops it into the bin. A bin level control sensor tells the machine when to stop.

Break any link in that chain and you get a specific symptom. A failed inlet solenoid means no water and no ice. Scale on the grid means the freeze cycle cannot finish, so production falls and cubes come out soft or cloudy. A stuck harvest cycle means the machine freezes but never releases. A dirty condenser means the whole refrigeration side runs hot and production drops on warm days first.

### The Portland water problem

Local water carries enough mineral content that scale deposition on the evaporator grid is the single most common cause of ice machine trouble in this area. It builds slowly, insulates the grid, and steals production a little at a time until somebody notices the bin is never full anymore.

Descaling fixes it today. Filtration is what stops it from coming back. We size the filter to your machine’s capacity and your actual water condition, not to whatever cartridge is cheapest, and we stock the common ones at our parts counter so a change is not a special order.

Filters generally need replacing every six months, sooner in high-volume or hard-water settings. A spent cartridge is worse than none, because it stops protecting the machine while everyone assumes it still is.

### Cleaning and sanitization

Ice is a food product, and health inspectors treat it that way. A proper service includes stripping scale from the grid and water path, running a sanitization cycle, cleaning the bin, checking the condenser and airflow, and verifying production against the machine’s rating. We document what was done so you have it on file.

Manufacturers generally specify cleaning at least twice a year. In a busy bar or a hard-water site, quarterly is more realistic. Putting that on a maintenance agreement means it actually happens on schedule instead of when the ice starts tasting off.

Why Choose Us

## Why Choose Us for Ice Machine Repair

### Factory authorized on the major brands

Manitowoc, Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic, and Follett warranty work handled with manufacturer-certified technicians and genuine OEM parts.

### We treat the cause, not the symptom

Most Portland ice machine failures trace back to scale and filtration. Descaling without fixing the water just resets the clock.

### Health-code sanitization

Ice is a food product. Our cleaning and sanitization work is done to a standard your health inspector will accept and documented for your records.

### Filters in stock

Our parts counter carries the filtration cartridges these machines need, so a filter change does not become a special order.

### Fast, because ice runs out fast

A bar with no ice is a bar with a problem right now. Emergency dispatch runs 24/7 across the Metro.

### Seventy-five years on commercial equipment

We service ice machines alongside walk-ins, reach-ins, and chillers, so one technician can look at everything in your kitchen.

The Process

## How Our Ice Machine Repair Works

1. 1

    ### Describe what it is doing

No ice at all, low production, cloudy or soft cubes, or a machine that runs but never harvests. Each points somewhere different.

2. 2

    ### Diagnose the water path

We check the inlet solenoid, water level, distribution, evaporator grid, harvest cycle, and condenser airflow before touching refrigeration.

3. 3

    ### Repair, descale, sanitize

Replace the failed component, strip scale off the grid and water path, and run a sanitization cycle so the ice comes back clean.

4. 4

    ### Fix the cause

If hard water caused it, we size and install the right filtration so you are not back here in four months.

Got Questions?

## Ice Machine Repair FAQs

Why did my ice machine stop making ice?

The usual suspects are a failed water inlet solenoid, scale buildup on the evaporator grid, a harvest-cycle fault, a dirty air-cooled condenser, or a bin level sensor that thinks the bin is full. Quick checks: confirm the water supply is on, the bin is not actually full, and the condenser is not packed with dust. Beyond that it needs a technician.

My machine runs but the ice is cloudy or soft. What is wrong?

Cloudy or soft ice usually means the freeze cycle is being cut short or the water path is fouled. Scale on the grid, a partially blocked distribution tube, low water level, or a refrigeration issue can all do it. Ice quality is often the first sign of scale before production actually drops.

How often should a commercial ice machine be cleaned?

At least twice a year, and quarterly in high-volume or hard-water settings. Manufacturers specify a cadence and health inspectors expect to see it happening. Deep descaling and sanitization are best done professionally, though your staff can handle exterior and bin cleaning between visits.

Is Portland water hard on ice machines?

Local water carries enough mineral content to build scale on evaporator grids over time, and the effect compounds in machines running long duty cycles. Proper filtration slows it dramatically, which is why we look at filtration on every ice machine call rather than just descaling and leaving.

How often do water filters need changing?

Typically every six months, sooner in high-use or hard-water conditions. Running a filter past its capacity is worse than no filter, because a spent cartridge stops working while everyone assumes it is protecting the machine.

Which brands do you service?

Manitowoc, Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic, and Follett are our core factory-authorized ice brands, and we handle many others as out-of-warranty repair. Send the model and serial and we will confirm before dispatch.

Can you handle warranty repairs on a new machine?

Yes. We are a factory-authorized warranty service provider, so covered repairs get done with genuine OEM parts by manufacturer-trained technicians, which keeps your coverage intact rather than jeopardizing it.

Can scale actually stop production entirely?

Yes. Scale insulates the evaporator grid, so the machine cannot freeze a full harvest. Production drops first, then ice quality, then the machine stops harvesting cleanly at all. It is gradual, which is why it usually gets ignored until it is severe.
