## Glycol Chiller Service for Craft Beverage

Portland’s craft-beverage scene runs on precise cooling. We service and repair glycol chillers for breweries, wineries, taprooms, and extraction operations, maintaining fermentation and serving temperatures, caring for fluid lines and pumps, and pairing chiller service with CO2 and nitrogen supply so production and pour stay consistent.

### How a glycol loop works, and where it goes wrong

A glycol chiller cools a reservoir of propylene glycol solution. A pump circulates that fluid through insulated lines to jackets on your fermenters, brite tanks, and serving vessels. Each tank has its own control valve and temperature controller, so one chiller holds a dozen different setpoints at once. That is why glycol won over direct-expansion cooling for anything past the smallest setup.

The loop fails in predictable places:

**The fluid itself.** Propylene glycol is not permanent. Concentration drifts as water gets added, corrosion inhibitors deplete, and pH moves. Fluid past its useful life stops protecting the loop and starts corroding it. Testing tells you where you are; topping off does not.

**The pump.** Reduced output starves the far end of the loop first, so the tanks furthest from the chiller drift while the near ones hold. That pattern is diagnostic.

**Insulation.** Uninsulated or damaged line runs bleed cooling capacity, sweat onto your cellar floor, and in cold spaces can freeze. The chiller runs longer to compensate, which costs energy and compressor life.

**The chiller’s own refrigeration circuit.** Dirty condenser, low charge, failed contactor. The same failures we see on any commercial refrigeration system, just attached to a fluid loop instead of a box.

### Diagnosing temperature drift

Drift across every tank usually means chiller capacity or pump flow. Drift on one or two tanks more often means a control valve, a solenoid, a temperature controller, or a balance issue on that branch. We check the loop end to end before condemning the chiller, because replacing a chiller that was never the problem is an expensive way to learn that.

### Planning for growth

Adding fermenters adds load, and crash-cooling adds a lot of it at once. Before you buy tanks, tell us what you are adding and we will tell you whether the chiller you own can carry them. That conversation is much cheaper before the equipment arrives than after. We recently

on the same account, one company can cover both your cooling and your pour.

Why Choose Us

## Why Choose Us for Glycol Chiller Service

### We understand craft-beverage cooling

Fermentation temperature control is not the same problem as holding a walk-in at 38 degrees. Different tanks, different stages, different setpoints, one loop.

### Chiller service and gas on one account

Your glycol maintenance and your CO2 or nitrogen delivery come from the same company on the same account. One fewer vendor to chase.

### Portland's brewery density is our route

The Central Eastside and Pearl hold the densest concentration of taprooms in the city, and our shop is minutes away.

### Fluid condition, not just fluid level

Glycol degrades. Concentration drifts, inhibitors deplete, and pH moves. We test rather than top off and hope.

### We plan for your next tanks

Adding fermenters changes your load. We tell you whether the chiller you have can carry them before you buy them.

### Licensed and long established

Oregon CCB #65271, in business since 1949, with the same crew that services the rest of your refrigeration.

The Process

## How Our Glycol Chiller Service Works

1. 1

    ### Describe the drift

Which tanks are off setpoint, by how much, and whether it started gradually or suddenly. That narrows chiller, pump, or loop very quickly.

2. 2

    ### Check the loop end to end

Glycol concentration, reservoir level, pump output, pressure, flow balance across tanks, and insulation condition on the runs.

3. 3

    ### Repair or correct

Whether that is a pump, a control, a leak, a fouled condenser, or fluid that has simply aged out of spec.

4. 4

    ### Verify at the tank

We confirm each affected tank holds its setpoint under load before we leave, not just that the chiller reads correctly.

Got Questions?

## Glycol Chiller Service FAQs

Why do breweries use glycol instead of direct cooling?

One chiller can serve many tanks through a glycol loop, and each tank can hold its own setpoint independently. Direct-expansion cooling ties a refrigeration circuit to a single vessel, which works for a very small setup but does not scale across a cellar full of fermenters.

How often should glycol be tested or replaced?

Concentration should be checked periodically as part of scheduled maintenance, and fluid gets refreshed based on testing rather than a fixed calendar. Glycol degrades over time as inhibitors deplete and pH shifts, and worn-out fluid can corrode the loop from the inside.

My tanks are drifting a couple of degrees. Is that a chiller problem?

Not necessarily. Drift across all tanks usually points at the chiller or pump. Drift on one or two tanks more often means a flow balance issue, a failed solenoid or control on that tank, or insulation problems on that run. We check the loop before condemning the chiller.

What happens if glycol lines are not insulated properly?

You lose efficiency, the lines sweat and drip in your cellar, and in cold spaces they can freeze. The chiller compensates by running longer, which raises energy cost and shortens compressor life. Line insulation is cheap compared with what poor insulation costs over a season.

Can you service our chiller during production?

Usually yes, with planning. Some work requires taking the loop down, so we schedule it around your brew and packaging calendar. For urgent faults during active fermentation we dispatch on the emergency line.

Will our chiller handle more fermenters?

That depends on capacity, current load, and how aggressively you crash-cool. Tell us the tanks you are adding and we can assess whether the existing chiller carries them or whether you need more capacity before the equipment arrives.

Do you serve wineries and distilleries too?

Yes. Process cooling for wineries, distilleries, and extraction operations runs on the same principles as brewery glycol, and we service those systems along with taproom and brewery loops.

Can you supply the CO2 and nitrogen as well?

Yes. Our gas department delivers food-grade CO2, nitrogen, and 75/25 beer gas blends on scheduled routes across the Portland Metro area, and it can sit on the same account as your chiller service.
